Tug

When the country's workboat needs expanded during the 1990's, the J.M. Martinac Shipbuilding Corporation responded. Martinac's line of next generation tugs, including the z-drive equipped ship-assist tug and the revolutionary articulated (ATB) tug, redefine the modern workboat. With unmatched maneuverability, power, and durability, the Martinac Tug continues to impress its demanding owners.

The 125' ATB Tug
represents the latest in tugboat design and construction. One of the largest and most powerful tugs ever built in the U.S., the Martinac ATB represents the 'brains' of the Articulated Tug/Barge system. When properly utilized, this advanced system provides a fierce competitive advantage to petroleum transportation companies.

The 125' ATB tug represents the latest in tugboat design and construction. One of the largest and most powerful tugs ever built in the U.S., the Martinac ATB represents the 'brains' of the Articulated Tug/Barge system. When properly utilized, this advanced system provides a fierce competitive advantage to petroleum transportation companies.

ATB Articulation is achieved using a 50-inch diameter INTERCON™ coupler, a self-contained pre-fabricated pin running the entire width of the vessel. When mated with the barge, the tug is 'locked' in position on a horizontal axis, still able to pitch independently from the barge. The ATB tug has little fendering and is built never to come in contact with the barge except through its connecting rams. This design allows the tug to remain permanently in position regardless of weather conditions, enabling greater operational speed, lower fuel consumption, and enhanced performance.

The Martinac ATB is equipped with two EMD-710 main engines providing a combined 7,000-horsepower and achieving a bollard pull rating of 300,000 pounds! Auxiliary power is supplied by four Alaskan Diesel Electric 99-kilowatt generators. Completing this powerfully built vessel is its compliance with the International Convention for the Safety of Lives at Sea (SOLAS). The only SOLAS ATB tug operating in U.S. waters, the Martinac ATB represents one of the safest, most advanced working vessels in the world.

75' Z-Drive Tug

Built for harbor and inland waterway ship-assist, the 3,000-horsepo wer Martinac 75' Z-Drive Tug is powered by two Detroit Diesel 16V-149 TI-DDEC engines and utilizes two Niigata 360° rotatable z-drives with Kort Nozzles. The potent combination allows this stout vessel to achieve 85,000 pounds of bollard pull. With two Cummins 115-kilowatt generators, an 8,000-pound Atlas hydraulic deck crane and an operating crew of only two men, this tug is one of the most cost-effective workboats available.

The 91' Z-Drive Tug

is the latest in Martinac's line of combination towboat/ship-assist tugs. Unlimited maneuverability is achieved with a pair of Ulstein-Aquamaster 360° rotatable z-drives with PV-Duct nozzles and two 1600-horsepower Detroit Diesel engines. This formidable combination provides 105,000 pounds of forward bollard pull, with an equal amount when operating in reverse! Undaunted by ships or barges, the Martinac 91' Z-Drive Tug cruises at over 14 knots.
